How Far in Advance do Shoppers Plan Meals?

Each year, the Food Marketing Institute (FMI) publishes a study called “U.S. Grocery Shopper Trends: Future Outlook.” The 20-page report gives dozens of insights and interesting perspective on what shoppers eat, how they eat and how they buy/get food.

Over the coming weeks, Team News will break down the lengthy study into bite-sized bits of delicious details to help AFS team members and retailers better understand the habits and trends of today’s shoppers. Additionally, readers will get additional insight from experts at AFS.

Here’s today’s fact from FMI:

Forty-six percent of consumers plan their meals the same day.

“With many shoppers making meal decisions hours or minutes before eating, it’s imperative we communicate with them every day,” said Maddie Gilbert, marketing manager at Associated Food Stores. “One way we do this is through our social media efforts. We use social media to drive attention to recipes, exclusive brands, special events and more. By staying top of mind, we drive home the message that our stores are destinations for quick and easy meal ideas and grab-and-go solutions.”
