The Donald P. Lloyd Spirit of Independents award is presented to a member retailer who exemplifies the strength of character, mental fortitude and steadfast determination of the company’s founder. The award is presented to the recipient at the Associated Food Stores’ annual meeting.

Monte met his wife Shelly at the store. Shelly’s mother sent her to have the “nice young man” at the butcher block slice a roast. Shelly left with a roast…and a date for a movie. They have been married 45 years and have five children and 14 great-grandchildren.

Monte and his sister, Jan, are owners of Peterson’s Market in Riverton, Utah. Peterson’s Market has grown from renting space in a commercial building to owning their current 54,000-square-foot facility.

Monte’s positive impact was felt far from Riverton. Monte became a member of Associated Food Stores’ board of directors in 2001 and served as chairman of the board for nine years.

Today, Peterson’s employs over 100 well-trained associates which, along with his family, Monte considers his greatest asset. Through his team members, his store offers the highest levels of customer service, quality and value. Peterson’s supports many community events, schools and charitable activities and is a pillar of the Riverton area.
