The Associated Food Stores distribution center in Farr West welcomed Derek Brown last Friday. Derek is a prominent Utah attorney and former Chairman of the Utah Republican Party who is running to be Utah’s Attorney General. The visit highlighted the distribution center’s pivotal role in supplying local grocery stores across Utah and the surrounding states.
Brown toured the facility to gain a deeper understanding of the complex logistics and transportation efforts that keep independent retailers in stock. The distribution center ensures AFS member stores across nine states can meet the needs of their communities despite the ongoing challenges posed by national supply chain disruptions.
Sarah Pettit, AFS’ public affairs director, shared the significance of the visit. “We were pleased to have Derek see firsthand how our distribution center functions as the backbone for hundreds of local grocery stores and to meet members of our phenomenal distribution team. Our mission at AFS is to enrich lives, and it’s important for community leaders to understand how we care for and support the local economy.”
The Farr West distribution center serves as a central hub for providing food and other products to AFS’s retail members, helping them remain competitive in an increasingly challenging retail environment. The facility’s operations are integral to maintaining a consistent supply of goods, ensuring shelves are stocked and customers have access to the fresh, high-quality products they need.
During the tour, Brown got an inside look at Project ROAR, the distribution center’s modernization and automation effort and was impressed by the extensive use of technology. He also spoke with AFS leaders about the ongoing efforts to streamline operations and reduce logistical hurdles while continuing to focus on team member success and satisfaction. In addition, topics like PBM reform, retail theft and anti-trust were discussed with thoughtful dialogue and opportunities for collaboration in a meaningful relationship in the future.
The visit highlighted AFS’s commitment to supporting independent grocers and its impact on the wider community. AFS continues to play a vital role in strengthening Utah’s economy, providing the infrastructure and resources that allow local stores to thrive.
