America’s Potluck officially launched in a kickoff event at North Salt Lake Lee’s Marketplace, Foxborough, on June 4, bringing together state leaders and prominent voices from across Utah to celebrate connection, community, and shared meals.
The evening event set the stage for America’s Potluck, a nationwide initiative taking place Sunday, July 5, designed to encourage people across the country to gather with neighbors, family, and friends to share a meal and strengthen community ties, celebrating America250.
The kickoff began with stirring musical performances that captured both the spirit of unity and national pride. Miss Utah delivered a powerful rendition of “America the Beautiful,” while a local children’s choir performed “The Star-Spangled Banner,” setting a hopeful and celebratory tone for the evening.
Food for the evening was provided by Lee’s Marketplace, with an impressive spread of catering options made by Lee’s Executive Chef John Spencer, including Lee’s favorite items from the deli, bakery, and produce departments. Every detail of the event was considered, including seasonal décor, floral, and festive-themed desserts.
First Lady Abby Cox addressed attendees, emphasizing the simple yet powerful role that shared meals play in fostering belonging and connection.
She was joined by Jonathan Badger, CEO of Lee’s Marketplace, who generously hosted the event. “As independent grocers, we are honored to support this effort. helping provide the ingredients, the meals, and the inspiration that make gatherings like this possible- which is the core of why we do what we do. At Lee’s Marketplace, as your local and independent grocer, we are more than a grocery store; we are part of the fabric of this community. Every day, we serve neighbors, families, and friends, and we see firsthand how food connects people. Whether it’s a weeknight dinner, a holiday meal, or a backyard gathering, grocery stores play a small but meaningful role in bringing those moments to life,” said Badger.
A notable feature of the kickoff event was the strong presence of local influencers and community voices, who attended to help spread awareness and excitement about America’s Potluck. Through their platforms, these attendees are playing a key role in encouraging participation and highlighting the importance of community engagement.
Organizers emphasized that cities and towns across the country are already stepping up, hosting local potlucks and encouraging residents to take part to help celebrate Utah’s 250th birthday- Sunday, July 5.
From large city parks to small neighborhood streets, communities nationwide are being encouraged to organize their own gatherings, reinforcing the idea that everyone has a place at the table.
As the kickoff concluded, the message was clear: on Sunday, July 5, Americans are invited to come together, share a meal, and build stronger connections, one potluck at a time.
With all 50 states participating and communities mobilizing at every level, America’s Potluck is poised to become a meaningful national moment centered on unity, generosity, and the simple act of sharing food. Learn more about America’s Potluck here: https://america250.utah.gov/americaspotluck/
