Hundreds of students received free dental care this week as Associated Food Stores and Colgate partnered with TeamSmile, a national nonprofit, to bring a mobile dental clinic to West Jordan Middle School.

At one point, 25 dental chairs were running at the same time as dentists, hygienists and volunteers provided exams, X-rays, cleanings, fillings and, when needed, extractions. Students from West Jordan Middle and several surrounding schools were bused in for the event. For many, it was the first dental visit of their lives.

TeamSmile transported dental equipment, supplies and portable chairs to the school. The Kansas City-based nonprofit works with professional sports teams, dentists, dental schools and community groups across the country to offer preventative and restorative dental care to underserved children.

Organizers also made the day fun. Music played throughout the gym, and kids enjoyed face painting, mascots, sports team representatives and other activities designed to keep the atmosphere light. The Jazz Bear and the Utah Mammoth’s Tusky spent time with students and helped calm nerves.

Kristy Coon, senior category manager at Associated Food Stores, said the event showed what can happen when organizations work together for families. “We’re grateful for the chance to partner with Colgate and TeamSmile to remove barriers to care,” Coon said. “Knowing these kids are getting treatment they may have never had access to is incredibly meaningful.”

TeamSmile leaders said the goal is to expand access to vital dental services while creating a positive experience that encourages lifelong oral health.
