It’s a startling statistic, but one in six Utah children face hunger. That’s why local non-profit and food pantry located in Salt Lake City, For The Kids, is working to help keep bellies full and why the nonprofit contacted Associated Food Stores requesting support.
For the Kids has a program that helps keep children fed over the weekend. Many children that are food insecure receive food stability though the week from their local school, with breakfast, lunch, and even afterschool programs. Dinner meals and weekends can become a challenge for families who struggle to make ends meet. For the Kids has created a weekend program where food is placed in children’s backpacks before the weekend. The food, placed in a paper bag, is discreetly given to children who need it.
“We so appreciate the help of Associated Food Stores,” said Kenzie Richardson, operations manager, For The Kids. “The paper bags we were purchasing were a major expense. This will help us deliver more food to kids who need it.”
For the Kids received a donation in paper bags that will help them continue this program for approximately the next year. The non-profit has also been connected to the AFS distribution center for buying opportunities at discount prices, so they can continue to help children in the Salt Lake Valley.
Steve Johnson, Sarah Pettit, along with Jeff Callister from GVH worked on coordinating and supplying the donation.
“It’s wonderful to know we have the chance to give back and support our local community, in this case, kids that need weekend meals,” said Steve Johnson, senior category manager, Associated Food Stores. “Even small contributions can make a big difference for so many. I’m glad to work for a company that allows us to contribute in such meaningful ways.
