Associated Food Stores team members, and their families, turned out in strong numbers for the Utah Valley Marathon this year. Approximately 25 team members participated across race distances.

Participating team members were motivated by a mix of personal and shared goals, including the opportunity to represent Team AFS, take advantage of the company’s race sponsorship and train toward a meaningful fitness milestone. Team members trained alongside spouses, children and friends and doing so created opportunities for connection long before race day.

“Many people participated because they wanted to do something as part of the AFS team, and it gave them a chance to train for a race and accomplish a fitness goal,” said Ashley Peterson, wellness facilitator at AFS. “There was also a lot of family involvement, which made the experience even more meaningful.”

The physical benefits of training were a key part of the experience, but participants also saw gains in confidence and mental well-being.

“Training and completing a race supports cardiovascular, muscle and brain health, but it also builds confidence,” Ashley said. “When someone signs up, puts in the work and crosses that finish line, there is a real sense of pride and self-efficacy.”

Runners said the rewards extended beyond the medal and finish line with several pointing to the energy of race day and the sense of accomplishment shared with others.

“Everyone loves the medal, but people also gain a sense of accomplishment and quality time with loved ones,” Ashley said. “The atmosphere at races is special. There is so much energy, and people are there to support each other.”

For those considering a future race or wellness event, Ashley emphasized that participation matters more than pace.

“It doesn’t matter how fast or slow you think you are,” she said. “Any movement is great, and the person who finishes last gets the same medal as the person who gets first place.”

AFS leaders say the continued participation in events like the Utah Valley Marathon reflects the company’s broader focus on supporting team member health, connection and overall well-being.
