Matthew Sare was recently promoted to senior accountant at Associated Food Stores (AFS). In this new role, he will manage the finances for Insurance and MDI, lead the month-, quarter-, and year-end close, and assist with the annual budget and audit. His responsibilities will also expand to include greater support for the pharmacy department and additional month-end reporting.
Matt’s career with the company began working with AFS in 2016 as a bagger at Macey’s Lehi. He quickly advanced to supervisor, then e-commerce supervisor, assistant front-end manager, and later front-end manager. In June 2023, he joined AFS in the accounting department. After more than nine years with the organization, he continues to build on his strong foundation of retail and financial experience.
“I am excited to be able be more involved in the financials,” Matt said. “This was something I enjoyed learning during my studies in school. I am also excited to work more with the pharmacy team. I have enjoyed working with them and am looking forward to giving them added support.”
Throughout his time with AFS, Matt has valued the relationships he’s built and the opportunities to strengthen operations. He has enjoyed supporting pharmacy customers and helping refine rebate processes to better align with their systems. His dedication to collaboration and improvement has made a meaningful impact on both teams and customers.

Matt enjoys snowboarding at Brighton and has recently taken up golf. He is also training for a triathlon taking place this weekend. He looks forward to deepening his accounting knowledge, growing with the corporate accounting team, and continuing to make a difference in his new position.
