This school year, Associated Food Stores is proud to continue supporting Catholic Community Services through the Bridge the Gap program at Liberty Elementary in Ogden, Utah. Six volunteer assignments are scheduled: September 18, October 23, November 13, December 11, February 12, and April 16. Each date needs 14 volunteers. The executive team has committed to covering travel and volunteer time, making it easier for team members to help serve. The work takes about one and a half to two hours. Since it is held outdoors, volunteers are encouraged to dress for the weather.
The program provides food that students can take home and share with their families. For many team members, the experience has been uplifting. Josh Smith, director of retail pricing, described it as “a great break from the pressures of our day to day and a great team building opportunity.”
Others spoke about the personal impact of volunteering. Tony Merrill, distribution center general manager said, “Every time I leave, I think about how fortunate we are to have what we have. Having this need in our community and being able to help put food on the table, and a smile on the kids’ faces, brings a lot of joy to my heart.”
Chante Johnson, an AFS buyer shared, “The smile on the kids’ faces is amazing. To see their faces light up when you complement their outfit or hair is priceless.” Suzanne Bitter, senior support specialist added, “I enjoy finding something different to say to encourage each child. These darling children are our future.”
For some, convenience and connection make the event even more meaningful. “Since I live up here, it is very convenient for me and I would do it again,” said Ron Dille, retail accounting manager. Laci Peake, human resources assistant pointed out another benefit: “I have a lot of fun getting to see Farr West team members who I haven’t met in person. I always think it’s a bummer how fast the event goes by.”
The program combines service, gratitude, and community spirit. Team members who have participated often express how much they look forward to returning. Anyone with questions can contact Denise Ward. Click here to sign up.
