Macey’s beloved mascot, Kong, has turned 13, and Macey’s invited guests of all ages to join the celebration.
Starting Monday, August 4, Macey’s kicked off a week of festivities including coloring pages, birthday doughnuts and special-edition Kong Kones and shakes available throughout the stores’ deli areas. Guests could also enter to win a birthday cake by commenting on Macey’s Facebook or Instagram giveaway posts.
The highlight of the celebration was a Kong Kone eating contest on Saturday, August 9. Many contestants competed, with winners receiving gift bags that include free Kong Kones for a year.
Kong Kones, the towering soft-serve ice cream cones named after the store’s iconic gorilla mascot, have become a tradition for many families across northern Utah.
“Kong has been a big part of the Macey’s family for 13 years,” said Greg Welling, vice president of Macey’s. “Kong Kones have become a tradition for many families, and we love getting to celebrate with our guests.”
More than just a typical cone, Kong Kones are known for their “twisted, towering turret of fantastic flavor,” served in vanilla, chocolate, or a popular twist of both.
Since 1986, when ice cream first appeared at Macey’s Lindon Snack Bar, Kong Kones have grown into a staple of the store’s offerings. In 1991, the treat became a permanent menu item at the Orem Macey’s deli.
As Macey’s continues to grow, the Kong Kone remains a favorite stop for children, parents, and teens, a tradition that keeps guests coming back, especially during Kong’s 13th birthday celebration.
